we had a really interesting talk this time around and the speaker was maya schmidt. maya schmidt is an illustrator, comic artist and graphic recorder who's currently working under sketch post. i actually knew about sketch post before because i've attended and volunteered for events that have hired them to come do sketches for them. i'm always really impressed by their works. i've always wondered what their creative process is like because they're able to just put down their illustrations and notes in such short amount of time on a fixed canvas. here are some of maya's works:
maya gave us so many tips and insights to her process as a creative. i loved that she was really open with us, even sharing the commission rates she gets from her clients. i find it super cool learning her journey as a comic artist and graphic recorder. she showed that with many practices and experimentations you'll eventually reach a certain level of being skilled.
she gave us several tips of how to get noticed:
table at conventions
participate in fanzines
post regularly on social media
join competitions
she also emphasised for us to TAKE CARE OF OUR HANDS since drawing long hours can cause strain to our wrists and might even have the risk of getting carpal tunnel. i think that's a good tip because recently i've spent a lot of hours designing and drawing to the point my wrist hurts whenever i move it and that's kind of distracting and slows down my process when i'm working. although it's important to do work, it's equally important to take breaks as well!:-)
