First day, First class. For me at least.
What is connection making and why is it important? I think making connection is when you take very different things and try to relate it by putting two and two together and making it make sense. As a designer, I'm always trying to train myself to think critically.
For this class, we did a workshop called Connection Making, which included team effort! I was teamed up with Amira, Evon and Nabilah for the first part of the workshop. First, we had to come up with the uses of a thick book, as crazy as it can be used for. It doesn't even have to be logical! We included a lot of crazy uses like to hit someone, a nutcracker, chopping board, to shield from bullets and knives, and many more!!
Afterwards we had to narrow down and pick one of the uses and expand from there. We picked nightstand and from there we created a product named BOOKEY!Bookey is a nightstand with drawers and most importantly, a secret safe which has a very high level of security. ;-) I believe that we could improvise much more in terms of the material and the mechanism of it. Overall, I think we did a pretty okay job in 1 hours time :-)
Through this workshop, we were able to learn the difference between divergent and convergent. I drew a diagram the same way Ms Vin Sze had helped us to visualise it. The 'thick book' activity was a very easy way to help us understand how a design process works. To start something is to know how to process works. After listening to Ms Vin Sze's advice, I learnt that it's important to:
think from other's perspective (client's and audience's)
show the researches that have been done
consider sustainability
know your target audience and environment
show visual reference and inspiration
Apart from that we also did another group activity which is to state 'What is Graphic Design and Its Role' and 'What is Design Process'. The image below shows the things we wrote down! To us, a design process starts from a ball of ideas which slowly untangles into the final outcome. In a design process, we should consider things like story, empathy, emotion, clarity and message. It's good to have a purpose when it comes to designing something so we know which direction to move towards.
I guess learning all these are essential so we know how to start our assignment. I know that what I need to do to start off my assignment now is to research and brainstorm a lot!!!
