1st🎐

first class of gd in context today!!!!! it was very much packed with information and my brain is definitely fried but happy that i (mostly) know what's about to unpack this semester so yay :-D

we went through a lot of things together, mainly the project briefs and timeline for the sem.

we have three parts: Practice Position Professional

gd in context (pt1 & pt2) has 9 projects in total that we have to submit :,-) we will be fine......... i hope. the first project we're going to kickstart off with is the "I AM AMPLIFIER" project. for this project, we have to come up with a placard design with the play on typography. we were shown a few examples to help spark inspirations. such as:

Guerrilla Girls - feminism (gorilla mask)

WOMEN GET RESENTFUL (PROJECTS/RESISTANCE, 2018)

Fahmi Reza - politics (najib clown)

Fahmi Reza and his artwork (Khalizan, M. I. M., 2018, August 6)

Keith Haring - AIDS awareness (pink triangle)

Ignorance = Fear 1989, Poster (Smith-Laing T., 2019, June 17)

WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON?

- signature style

- a symbol - to convey a clear message

- LOUD, ACTIVE, URGENT - straightforward

- approach people

for this project, we are to research about the commercial world and use the theme "how design is used to turn us into a design machine"for our placard. the placard will also actually be an animated GIF. example shown below!

Design Manifesto '19., 2019

another homework we got today was to have a group discussion on the manifesto "First Things First" 1964 by Ken Garland.

we were split into several groups. I'm in group 1 with 4 other members. we decided to have the group discussion today so that we wouldn't be overwhelmed by other work we have to do this upcoming week. I'm glad that my group was proactive and we had a great discussion. :-) I'm going to be the one summarising our answers for the questions given and then submit it before our class this Thursday.

🌟a quick summary of "first things first":

we learned that ken garland and many graphic designers were proposing the idea of changing their perspectives as designers, by prioritising the use of graphic design skills in more important things that could lead to the betterment of the society. instead of just wasting their skills on trivial things like advertisements, they know they could use their skills for greater purposes.
