anti-consumerism

part 2 of the assignment we were given is to learn what anti-consumerism is and the analysis of anti-consumerism from adbusters magazine. attached below are the presentation slides of my group:

who's adbusters magazine? you may wonder. adbusters is one of a handful of magazines in the world that receives zero funding from advertising, corporate sponsorship or government/foundation grants. they are entirely reader-supported, allowing them to remain fiercely independent in what they do and say. they operate as a non-profit organisation, which means the money they raise through the sales of their magazines and other merchandise goes back to fund their campaigns and the production of the magazine (Adbusters Media Foundation: Journal of the Mental Environment, n.d.).

i think adbusters are really cool for doing this as an NGO, using their platform to raise awareness about different issues whether it's social, political or environmental. i love love their spoofads. even if there's no article and just visuals, it says a lot. my favourite would be 'Unswooshing', it says a lot with just images. from what i learned, the idea of their spoofads is to mock these brands for their unethical ways or the harm it brings to society.

some interesting things:

- the parody tag line "just douche it" as someone's eating unhealthy food while exercising

- it brings light to the issue of nike having sweatshops and yet they sell their products at such high prices

- the logo etched into one's skin for the sake of it being the brand of "nike"
