commercial design
commercial design is designers creating products that are useable, useful and desirable that people would want to buy. the success of a commercial design is determined by the amount of profit made from the sales of the product.
experimental design
experimental design is more about the process than the outcome itself. instead of having an end goal of how it looks in mind, it's actually more motivated by curiosity and all about exploration and experiments done to understand and learn about something. the outcome may end up being used for marketing but that's not the original intent.
responsible design
responsible design is all about creating designs that helps those in need. using design as a voice for the communities that don't and also raising awareness to important issues. responsible design may be tied to the market but their motivation is not for profit. it's an act of service to the market that's being ignored.
discursive design
discursive design is art that communicates ideas or conveys message to the audience. these designs are created and meant for discourse, to be talked and discussed about, in different points of view. a lot of these designs are usually seen in exhibitions, print and film. i think they often use objects as metaphors to create discursive designs, the designer may create designs that speak about the issues they care about.
from what i have read and understood,
commercial design - profitability
experimental design - experimentations and exploration
responsible design - act of service
discursive design - a message/issue to discuss
