06 Side by Side by Tactile Typography
Side by Side is a Sheffield, Yorkshire UK based design studio who does branding and bespoke typography. They have worked with many clients of companies and projects. It was started by two friends who were passionate about graphic design but it didn't stop there. Their curiosity had them exploring into different things that helped build their design studio into what it is today. When they accept a project, they don't stop at creating a logo, they create a package where the logo may form part of a much wider identity system or re-brand.
One of the projects they have taken up is Dig Deep. Dig Deep's aim is to provide schools and communities with clean water and safe toilets in rural Kenya. They build infrastructure that will provide a school or community with reliable, clean water using the accessible materials there (Dig Deep, n.d.). When Side By Side heard about this, they felt the need to collaborate to them and do what they can to help with the cause.
They figured that Dig Deep's process is like the ripple effect since they provide communities with access to clean water, toilets and sanitation training which the village elders then pass on to the younger generation and other villages nearby (Behance, n.d.).

they also created a typography for them inspired by the handwritten letters Dig Deep had received from the African kids of the places Dig Deep had worked.
From the handwritten notes they've went through, they picked 6 to use and named the 6 typefaces after the children's letters: John, Debora, Emmanuel, Brendah, John, Doreen & Carlos. All of them had unique handwritings that represent them in their own ways.

i think this project is so meaningful and amazing. you can tell that Side By Side's core values not only lie in designs that are good but also in some way positively impact the world. They said on their website that they like to work with companies that have purpose at their core. Whilst profit is fundamental to all business, they're more aligned to companies that choose to give back, and want to improve our world (Disciplines. (n.d.)
