I BELIEVE I CAN DRAW

we started off class with a TEDx talk video - Why People Believe They Can't Draw (and how to prove they can) by Graham Shaw. and not going to lie, it was very reassuring haha. Many of us, including myself, are insecure with our drawing skills and i think this video really helped me understand that it's important that we challenge ourselves and to not limit ourselves to only do things we believe we can do. 🤸🏻‍♀️

we then did blind contouring! it's basically drawing without looking at your canvas and without breaking your line/lifting your pen off your canvas. i had to draw Sally and Chloe haha it was such a fun activity as all of us were laughing over the results we got from doing blind contouring!!

we also did urban sketching and visual journalism! what i understood from this lesson is that urban sketching is observing what's around us and then capturing a moment. what's special is that we're the ones who get to experience the moment and tell a story through our sketches. it's not just observing, it's also about learning cultures and history. i think it's great because we can capture a fleeting moment in our own way and style!

we ventured out of class to sketch whatever seems interesting to us. i ended up at the entrance of INTI, the vending machine near the stairs and the cafeteria. i used different colour of markers to indicate the differences between the scenes.

an artist who does something along the lines of visual journalism that inspires me is sarah lasater. she's an artist who is based in los angeles. i like her style a lot because she has her own distinct style. she uses a lot of soft colours that contrast each other. she uses pencil and sometimes digitally too. i like the way she uses unusual proportions and lots of scribbly lines. from what i can tell, most of her drawings are from her daily life whenever she experiences something new or interesting. for example the most left pic below, she sketched someone who was also sketching something. it's like inception! 😯

another artist who does urban sketching that i recently found is gavin snider. he does a lot of sketches based on sceneries and people. it's like living the moment through his eyes. he uses pen and colour markers for his sketches. i like the way he can sketch out such a mundane scene and make it seem so nice and serene (if that's the word?), it's like u can find solace just by looking at his art.

>>> going off topic for a bit but i'm going out with some friends this friday (aka tomorrow) to explore KL for our assignment and hopefully i'll be able to do some sketching ;-) we'll see how it goes! cheers to the end of the week x
