what is context?
context provides the audience a situation or a background picture of where the piece of information originated and any other information that is involved.
so, why is context important?
from what i know, context is important because it helps shape the story/message we want to tell or convey to our audience. because we are designers, our design itself should be able to convey its message without needing more external explanation from the designer. without context, our message could be misunderstood and misled to another theory.
to understand better about context, we watched a ted talk video by Christoph Niemann called You Are Fluent In This Language (and don't even know it). in this video, he talked about how we, people have this unspoken ability to interpret and understand a visual without needing any explanation. most of us don't even realise that we have this ability and it's fascinating, don't you think so? we actually get through our daily lives looking at things and understanding them on our own just by looking at it. we may be looking at these certain objects but instead of just its primary use, we look at them from different perspectives without realising it.
he also mentioned that one of the most important skills for an artist would be empathy, to look at things from the perspective of your audience. i think that really stuck to my mind.
we did an activity in class to understand more of context and what it can do.
ms sue jane showed us the image i attached below and told us to think of 10 things that this can be and draw it out. it can be as out of the box as we can think. it was easy yet not very easy. after drawing 10, we drew another 10. and then we repeated the process. as time went by, it was harder to think of more but it was still possible (and crazy).
here are the things i drew with the red round dot! (slide to view) i thought of things i never thought i would ever think of and it was fun. it's so interesting to think that one red round dot could be so many things just by adding context to it.
all of us thought of different things the red round dot could be. for me, it was ice cream, hot air balloon, face mask, a kendama and many more things. that's the beauty of it. it may seem like a simple red round dot but all of us might tell different stories with it. it's like when we talk about place, to some people it may be a place with good memories but to some it may be a place with bad memories. i think our personal experiences affect the way we look at things and the context we put into it.
